Patient Monitor
What is a Patient Monitor?
A device used to continuously or intermittently observe and display various physiological parameters of a patient. These parameters provide information about the patient’s health status and help medical staff make decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment.
Some patient monitors may include alarms to alert medical staff to abnormal readings or changes in patient conditions and data storage capabilities to record and review trends over time.
What Types of Patient Monitors Are There?
There are many types of patient monitors. Some common types of patient monitors include cardiac monitors, vital signs monitors, multi-parameter monitors (MPMs), fetal monitors, pulse oximeters, and more.

What is the Difference Between a Patient Monitor and a Vital Sign Monitor?
(1) Patient monitors can monitor a broader range of physiological parameters. Vital sign monitors only monitor vital signs and do not include the ability to monitor parameters other than basic vital signs.
(2) Patient monitors are usually used to continuously monitor multiple parameters for patients with complex conditions or undergoing surgery. Vital signs monitors are used to monitor a patient’s vital signs routinely.
